The family room is a great place for the family to find entertainment and relaxation. Yes, every room in the home needs to be appealing and beautiful but in the family room you can pretty much do what you want. The following tips and ideas will help you turn the family room into a place that incorporates the interests of your family and feels welcoming and original.

Think big

Think bulky and over-stuffed when it comes to the furnishings in the family room. How much more comfortable can it get than climbing into a big club chair, getting cozy next to the fireplace and listening to some soothing music? Whether the sofa or love seat you choose has plaid or striped upholstery or made with rich leather, make sure to go for pieces that look large and sturdy. Cozy throw blankets, nubby accent rugs and large, overstuffed throw pillows are all great accents to include that also add splashes of color to the room.

Add family-themed accessories

Items that are of meaning to the family are very important to add to the room. Put lots of family photos up on the walls, and even feature some crafts that your children made in school. You can display photos that were taken on a fun vacation on a coffee or sofa table. Also, if chess or checkers is a game the family likes to play, you should leave a set sitting on the game table. You’ll get a cozy and lived in atmosphere if you use these things.

Choose one central theme for the room

Does your family love to listen to music and watch movies? You should make the room resemble a theater or music room. Everyone needs a good view of a big screen television, arrange the sofa and some club chairs in a manner that allows them to view the television. It would be a great idea to divide the room into sections for the avid reader and hardcore gamer.

If your family is into playing ping pong, pool or foosball, why not leave half of the room open as a game room? This will work especially well if you have a pretty large family room.

Use the colors you love

You usually want to use calm and relaxing colors in most rooms which are for guests. Anything goes in the family room. The choice is yours, whether you’re going to use bright red and pale yellow or gold, rust and green. Going as far as purple or chartreuse may not be something you want to do, but experiment and play with color to see what works for you.

The family room’s name just says it all; it’s a room just for the family. Enjoy creating an atmosphere and environment that reflects your families interests and personalities and that your family will enjoy.
